Heritage Harvest
Alberta grown organic heritage grains
Heritage Harvest is an organic farm that specializes in heritage grains. Mark Gibreau, Henry Winnicki, and Ray Lefebvre run the farm near Strathmore, and have been growing grains since 2005. They specialize in Red Fife wheat, an early variety of wheat that made the fertile Canadian Prairie’s world famous in the 1800’s.
Heritage harvest believes in quality over quantity. They aim for a sustainable way of farming that boosts biodiversity on the prairies, as well as contributes to a stronger food security system. In 2011, they imported a stonemill from Denmark. The stone grind is a slow and steady process, with no heat, and allows Heritage Harvest to grind and package their grain on the farm.
Yields for the heritage grains Mark, Henry, and Ray grow are certainly much lower than modern conventional wheat varieties, yet we appreciate their effort to reintroduce the crops and aid in making agriculture in Alberta more biodiverse and sustainable.
Red Fife flour has a nutty flavour when baked into bread. Grab a loaf of Sidewalk Citizen’s Organic Red Fife bread next time you’re in the store; it’s baked with Heritage Harvest’s signature grain!
